Construction Project Manager Tapio Jalo travels between the office and sites.
Site visits are an important part of a construction project manager’s job. Today I started with an on-site meeting, then toured the site with the contractor. We checked out a few problems that needed to be solved and managed to move things along.
We went through some things flagged up during the health and safety audit. The audit is easy to carry out using an electrical tool that transfers data directly to a server. If we observe any deficiencies in the health and safety operations, we can attach an image and send a comment to the person in charge.
I drove back to the office after the site visit, and the team and I worked on the project’s communications plan. The co-working space in the office is ideal for team work. I also use other zones in the activity-based workplace during the day. Quiet rooms are perfect for tasks that require you to focus.
After the meeting, I went to a soundproof phone booth to make a call. I always try to make long calls in the peace and quiet of a phone booth, which also allows my colleagues to focus on their work. I updated my diary after the call.
In the afternoon, I sat at a free desk and went through the changes and additional jobs on the site. An important part of my job is to assess their accuracy and impact on costs. I had a couple of Skype calls related to these and checked the plans in the project database, quotes for the additional jobs in my emails and other files concerning the project. The digital age means that you don’t need paperwork for anything.
