Vantaa Main Police Station completed in its entirety in Jokiniemi – customer services to start next week
The first main police station in the new police building concept has been completed in Jokiniemi, Vantaa, with special attention paid to the functionality and environmental responsibility of the premises. The new main police station, which is spread over around 20 000 square metres, provides healthy, safe and appropriate premises for Eastern Uusimaa Police Department. It will also improve the accessibility and efficiency of the police services by centralising operations in one location. The police started operating in the new building on Monday 7 October 2024.
Eastern Uusimaa Police Department is centralising its services on the new main police station in Jokiniemi, Vantaa. The new station will bring together under one roof services such as licensing, receiving police reports, lost property, and interviews and meetings with police customers. The station will also provide modern working facilities for police control and emergency response operations, as well as for the storage of vehicles and equipment. The modern facilities will support the work of police staff and improve customer service, while the central location in Vantaa will increase the visibility of the police and strengthen the sense of security in the area.
“The operational space requirements of the police have changed over the years due to more vehicles, equipment and personnel. The new main police station responds well to these requirements. In the spring, Vantaa Police Prison moved to new premises, and in early October licence services, the reception of police reports and lost property also moved to Jokiniemi,” says Deputy Police Chief Tapio Lakanen.
Besides functionality, special attention has been paid to sustainable construction in the design and implementation of the building, for which the bar was set high for the main police station. Government construction projects are geared towards energy efficiency, environmental responsibility and effectiveness, and employee wellbeing. Individual examples of these sustainability goals include the photovoltaic system and green roof built for rain and melt water management featured in the building. The solar power plant’s electricity production will be fully utilised in the operations of the main police station.
Senate Properties, which is responsible for state-owned premises and properties, was responsible for the construction project in cooperation with the Eastern Uusimaa Police Department. The planning of the construction project began in 2020, and the sub-project of the police prison was completed already in spring 2024. The main and architectural design of the construction project was carried out by Arkkitehtitoimisto Lahdelma & Mahlamäki, and the main contractor of the project was SRV Rakennus Oy. Total construction costs are around €90 million.
First main police station based on new police building concept
The project completed in Vantaa is the first main police station to be built based on the new police building concept. The concept was renewed in the 2020s. The concept has been designed to deliver economic and operational benefits for the police and society. The new concept takes into account the changing needs of policing, such as larger police cars, more patrol equipment and digitalisation.
“We’re proud that the Vantaa Main Police Station project has been fully completed. This is the first modern main police station built based on the new police building concept. The project will serve as a model for future projects,” says Johanna Virsu, Construction Project Manager at Senate Properties.
The space solutions at the main police station based on the concept have been designed to improve patrol departures and return to their shifts as well as on-shift functions. The layout of various operations in the police building enables smooth movement and equipment collection, which saves time and boosts operational efficiency. Particular attention has been paid to the customer premises in the police building to ensure that they are functional, comfortable and secure. Ready-made modular solutions for larger and smaller police stations, as well as lock-up and cell spaces, reduce project design costs and shorten design lead times.
The next main police station in line with the concept will be completed in Oulu at the end of the year, and construction of a new main police station in Tampere has just started. Smaller police stations in line with the concept have already completed in Äänekoski and Kuusamo, for example. New police stations are also under construction in Kittilä and Salo. An extension to the main building of the National Bureau of Investigation, next to Eastern Uusimaa Main Police Station, completed in May 2024.
